In the Ministry of Education and Child Care early learning document, there was an activity for students to complete in the ‘When I Go to Kindergarten’ section. This document is below:
AHA Moment
This sparked an idea about adapting this document, or creating one similar for students to draw images in, and have an adult scribe their answers. This would be a great start of the year science activity not only learn about students, but gauge their wonders and help build further instruction around them.
Connections
This activity is connected to David Sobel’s article Beyond Ecophobia, as it is a great way to have students reflect on where they enjoy to play and explore, and what they like to do in that area.
This activity is connected to the kindergarten B.C. Science curriculum in the following areas:
- Big Idea: Daily and seasonal changes affect all living things.
- Curricular Competencies: Demonstrate curiosity and a sense of wonder about the world.
- Content: could be connected in various different ways, dependant on student wonders.
This activity is a great way to not only learn about students, but spark wonder, curiosity, and have students begin to think about the natural world around them!
