Using picture books is a great way to link Science and Literacy. Chapter 1: Why Read Picture Books in Science Class? from Picture Perfect Science Lessons, Expanded 2nd Edition explains the many benefits of including: context for concepts, more depth of coverage, improved reading and science skills, and opportunities to correct science misconceptions. Additionally, integrating picture books increases student engagement and scientific curiosity!

Science Picture Books

In class we had an opportunity to look at several Science picture books and pair them with a given Big Idea for different grade levels. This was a huge AHA moment for me, because it allowed us to creatively think of how to pair the books we had access to with curricular content. I am looking forward to doing this again, and actually using the book in the classroom!

The SD5 District Resource Centre has “Picture Perfect Science Lesson” resources and anchor books for kindergarten to grade 5, as well as “Picture Perfect STEM Lessons” for kindergarten to grade 5.

I was interested in finding even more Science picture books, so did some research. I found a great website, 50 Science Picture Books for Kids that Teach about Our Amazing World. This is another great resource that I look forward to using throughout my career!
